Merlin and Nimue
Avalon

The old Celtic concept of the "other world", a parallel universe where pagan gods and magic ruled, was readily adapted into the Christian idea of paradise. In Welsh the Isle of Avalon is called Ynys Wydryn which means "isle of apples", and after the battle of Camlan, Nimue is reputed to have taken the dying Arthur across the sea to this land of fruitfulness and plenty where he might be restored to health.
